DVB-IPTV, M-ticketing : Bretagne is a land of experimentation

The companies and research centers within the Bretagne ICT cluster develop very innovative products and solutions

M-ticketing has been tested since November 2007 in Rennes. During 2 months, train, bus and subway users will use a mobile phone to buy, pay and validate their transportation.


Bretagne is a key region in the ICT industry. Through its Competitiveness ICT Cluster “Media and Networks”, it knows how to bring together the 50 000 employees working in 900 companies and 25 schools and research centers.  The Cluster concentrates and optimizes their expertise and resources to elaborate state-of-the-art projects.
Key players and founding members of the cluster like Thomson, Thales, Alcatel-Lucent ... work together with innovative SMB’s and research centers like CNRS, Supelec or Inria to develop new products and technologies used by everyone. Among the latest Breton innovations:
M-ticketing has been tested since November 2007 in Rennes, the regional capital, at the initiative of Orange, the French National Railway Company SNCF and the public transportation company Keolis. During 2 months, train, bus and subway users will use a mobile phone to buy, pay and validate their transportation. The system uses RFID Near Field Communication (NFC) technologies and NFC compatible mobile phones.
This summer, the “Media and Networks” cluster also unveiled the first version of its first DVB-IPTV platform, allowing to broadcast TV programmes on a mobile phone with optimal image and sound quality.
What a progress since the minitel, a videotex online service considered as one of the world’s most successful pre-World Wide Web online services, also invented in Rennes in the early 80’s!
